How do I calculate the number of staples and rolls of landscape fabric I need?
Calculate the number of 6" square top staples and landscape fabric you need with our landscape staples and landscape fabric calculator.
How to use landscape fabric?
To install landscape fabric, first clear the area of trash/sticks/rocks and etc. Remove weeds as well. Then rake the area so it is as flat as possible. Once done, then roll out the landscape fabric and secure with a landscape staple every 3-5 feet. We recommend using 300 to 500 landscape staples for a 3 ft x 500 ft (or 1500 sq ft) roll. This will securely lock down the fabric in place.
Sandbaggy Landscape Fabric works great around plants as well. All you need to do is use a pair of scissors and cut an 'X' on the fabric where you want to place the plant.
Can I put landscape fabric over weeds?
Yes, you can put Landscape Fabric over weeds. However, we do not recommend it since the area will not be as flat and smooth. To do a proper job, remove all the weeds and other items and rake the area as flat as possible. Then, add the landscape fabric.
Does landscape fabric let water through?
Only some Landscape Fabric allows water go through. Only Non Woven Geotextile Fabric allows water to go through the fabric. Sandbaggy Non Woven Geotextiles allows at least 100 gallons per minute of flow-through every square foot of the material! Woven Landscape Fabrics do not though.
Do you put soil on top of landscape fabric?
Landscape Fabric should be installed right on top of soil. If you want to, you can add soil on top of the fabric too. If you have a thick layer of soil, we recommend using 9 inch or 12 inch landscape staples so the weed barrier fabric is securely fastened into the ground and cannot be moved.
Should landscape fabric go under gravel?
Yes, we highly recommend it. Adding a layer of landscape fabric not only stops weeds from growing through but also separates the gravel with the dirt beneath. This separation layer keeps the gravel clean and free of dirt and creates a more beautiful landscape.
How much does landscape fabric cost?
We sell Woven Landscape Fabrics for around $0.20 per square foot. Meanwhile, Non Woven Landscape Fabrics sell for around $0.30 per square foot.
The reason for the price difference is because Woven fabrics (less expensive option) do not allow water to flow through the fabric, while Non Woven Fabrics (more expensive option) allow at least 100 gallons of water to flow through per minute.
Be aware of many low quality weed barrier fabrics from Home Depot and other stores that tear like paper.
What is a good landscape fabric?
For weed barrier fabrics used under rocks, we recommend using a weed barrier fabric with at least 100 lbs of tensile strength. This 100 lbs of tensile strength means that if you pull the fabric apart with your hands, it would take 100 lbs of strength to pull the fabric apart. Most fabrics from hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowes only have about 25 lbs of tensile strength.
What are the different types of landscape fabric? Woven vs Non-Woven Landscape Fabric?
Woven Landscape Fabric is a strong weed barrier fabric made by cross weaving industrial grade polypropylene strands together. This forms a strong barrier to stop weeds from growing through. This fabric does not allow water to flow through. Great for applications such as rock/gravel landscaping, road/parking lot stabilization, stepping stone walkways and inside greenhouses.
Non-Woven Landscape Fabric is a soft & thick felt like material that is made from millions of polypropylene fibers to create a strong weed barrier fabric. This strong fabric also allows water to easily flow through the landscape fabric (at least 100 GPM per sq ft). Great for applications such as gardening/farming, landscaping, road stabilization, drainage installations, french drains, rip rap, retaining walls and volleyball court construction.
We sell both types of fabric because both fabrics are needed for different applications. In addition, woven landscape fabric is more economical compared with nonwoven landscape fabric.
To see our different fabrics, all the landscape fabrics that say 'Non-Woven' in the title are Non-Woven fabrics. All the fabrics that do not say anything are Woven.
How many ounces is landscape fabric?
Sandbaggy only sells landscape fabric that is at least 3 ounces in weight. Anything lighter than that should not be used as that signifies low quality. Landscape Fabric from Home Depot uses 2 oz fabric where you can tear the fabric like paper.
What size is landscape fabric?
We sell Landscape Fabric in many sizes including the following width of rolls: 3 ft, 4 ft, 6 ft, 10 ft, 15 ft and 17.5 ft. For narrow landscapes, smaller 3 ft wide rolls are the perfect product. For large square/rectangular landscapes, wide 15 ft wide rolls are most ideal as this makes installation twice as fast as using smaller rolls resulting in significant labor cost savings.
Sandbaggy products always come with free shipping to the continental USA and arrive in 4 business days if the shipment is less than 150 pounds.
