What makes Douglas Fir a good wood for stakes?
Douglas Fir is an ideal material because it's a strong, durable wood that resists splitting and breaking when driven into tough soil. It also has a natural resistance to rot and insects, ensuring the stakes last for multiple seasons in outdoor conditions.
How do you drive stakes into hard ground?
For very hard or rocky soil, create a pilot hole first using a piece of rebar and a sledgehammer. For moderately hard ground, wetting the area with water can help soften it. Always use a rubber mallet or hammer for best results, driving the stake in with firm, even strokes.
How do you properly stake a new tree with 48-inch stakes?
For a new tree, use two 48-inch stakes placed on opposite sides, just outside the root ball. Drive them about 18-24 inches into the undisturbed ground until they are firm. Use wide, flexible tree straps to loosely connect the trunk to the stakes, allowing the tree to sway slightly, which helps it build strength.
