What makes Douglas Fir a good wood for stakes?
Douglas Fir is an ideal material because it's a strong, durable wood that resists splitting and breaking when driven into tough soil. It also has a natural resistance to rot and insects, ensuring the stakes last for multiple seasons in outdoor conditions.
How do you drive stakes into hard ground?
For very hard or rocky soil, create a pilot hole first using a piece of rebar and a sledgehammer. For moderately hard ground, wetting the area with water can help soften it. Always use a rubber mallet or hammer for best results, driving the stake in with firm, even strokes.
How are 24-inch stakes used for silt fences?
The 24-inch length is ideal for light-duty silt fence installation. To be effective, regulations often require stakes to be driven 12-18 inches into the ground for stability. A 24-inch stake meets this requirement while leaving 6-12 inches above ground to properly secure the silt fence fabric.
