What makes Douglas Fir a good wood for stakes?
Douglas Fir is an ideal material because it's a strong, durable wood that resists splitting and breaking when driven into tough soil. It also has a natural resistance to rot and insects, ensuring the stakes last for multiple seasons in outdoor conditions.
How do you drive stakes into hard ground?
For very hard or rocky soil, create a pilot hole first using a piece of rebar and a sledgehammer. For moderately hard ground, wetting the area with water can help soften it. Always use a rubber mallet or hammer for best results, driving the stake in with firm, even strokes.
Are 18-inch stakes good for tomato plants?
Yes, the 18-inch stake is a great all-around wood tomato stake. Its length provides sturdy support for most determinate and bush-style tomato varieties, keeping the main stem and heavy fruit off the ground to prevent rot and disease.
