Difference Between Non Woven vs Woven Geotextile Landscape Fabric

Posted by Jordan Hamasaki on

Choosing the right landscape fabric depends on your project’s needs: weed control, water drainage, or eco-friendliness. At Sandbaggy, we offer four different options tailored to DIYers, landscapers, and farmers alike.

Here’s our quick guide to picking the right fabric:

Best for Driveways & Pavers: Standard Woven Fabric (Rated 350+ lbs!)
💪 Best for Driveways & Heavy Traffic: Heavy-Duty Woven Fabric
💧 Best for French Drains & Retaining Walls: Non-Woven Fabric
🌍 Best for Eco-Friendly Gardens: Biodegradable Paper

Which Landscape Fabric is Right For Your Project

Woven Geotextile Fabric: Best for Stabilization

Woven fabric is engineered for tensile strength. While it is often described as a weed barrier, its primary engineering role is separation and stabilization.

  • Permeability Truth: Contrary to popular belief, woven fabric is permeable; however, it is designed for a slower flow rate than non-woven options.

  • The "Snowshoe Effect": This fabric is ideal for driveway stabilization. It prevents heavy gravel from sinking into soft subsoils, a process known in construction as the "snowshoe effect".

  • Best Uses: Driveways, gravel paths, and heavy-duty weed suppression under rocks.

  • Lifespan: Designed to last 40–50+ years when buried.

Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric: Best for Drainage

Non-woven fabric (like our 8 oz Geotextile) is manufactured by needle-punching fibers together to create a felt-like material optimized for high-flow drainage and filtration.

High Flow Rate

With a water permeability of 100 GPM(Gallons Per Minute), it allows water to pass through rapidly while keeping soil particles in place.

The French Drain Warning

Never use woven fabric for a French Drain. Only use non-woven geotextiles for drainage trenches to ensure long-term filtration. According to EPA best management practices for subsurface drainage, selecting a fabric with a high flow rate (measured in GPM) is critical to preventing soil particles from clogging the system and causing residential flooding.

  • Best Uses: French drains, vegetable gardens, and areas where water must move quickly through the soil.

  • Lifespan: Our heavy-duty non-woven fabrics are built to last 50+ years.

Installation Tip: The "Burrito Wrap" Method

For a successful French Drain, use the "Burrito Wrap" technique:

  1. Line the Trench: Lay your Non-Woven fabric in the trench, leaving excess fabric on the sides.

  2. Fill & Pipe: Place your gravel and perforated pipe inside.

  3. Wrap it: Pull the excess fabric over the top of the gravel (like wrapping a burrito) before covering with topsoil. This creates a fully enclosed filter system.

Shop geotextile fabric by project: Woven for driveways/stabilization, Non-Woven for drainage & French drains.

Contractor Tip: The Geotextile Difference When bidding on construction projects, remember that woven is for strength (separation) and non-woven is for flow (filtration). Using a woven barrier in a high-silt drainage environment like a “French drain” is a leading cause of system failure.

FAQ's

What's the difference between woven and non-woven fabric?

Woven fabric is built for separation and stabilization (keeping rocks from sinking into dirt). Non-woven geotextile is built for filtration and drainage (letting water move while stopping soil).

The Decision Rule: Do you need to support weight (Driveway) or move water (Drainage)?

  • Support Weight: Choose Woven Geotextile.

  • Move Water: Choose Non-Woven Geotextile.

Can I use landscape fabric under mulch or rocks?

You can use both the woven and non woven fabrics under rocks and mulch, you can use the paper fabric under rocks but just keep in mind it is not as strong or as long lasting as the other options.

Safe For Organic Farming / Gardening?

Yes. Our Biodegradable Paper is fully compostable and safe to leave in the soil.

For our Synthetic Woven/Non-Woven fabrics: They are chemically inert and safe for use in organic gardening. Note for Certified Organic Farmers: USDA NOP regulations typically require synthetic plastic mulches to be removed from the field at the end of the harvest season.

Which fabric should I use for vegetable gardens?

We recommend non-woven fabric for vegetable gardens, it allows water and air through while still blocking weeds.

Our paper fabric is also a great option! Since it naturally biodegrades, it will enrich the soil and become mulch.

Is the biodegradable option compostable or safe for organic gardens?

Yes, our biodegradable paper is fully compostable and safe for organic use. It's made with no plastic and breaks down into natural materials.

Do I need landscape staples or pins?

Yes, we recommend securing your fabric with landscape staples every 1–2 feet along the edges and seams to prevent shifting. We recommend using our 6-inch heavy-duty staples.

Can I cut the fabric to fit my space?

Absolutely. All of our fabrics can be cut with scissors or a utility knife to fit your specific project.
