How Jute Netting Stops Erosion

Rainfall strikes the ground at speeds of up to 20 MPH, dislodging soil and causing significant erosion on unprotected slopes. When Sandbaggy Jute Netting is installed, it acts as a protective layer that absorbs the impact of rainwater, drastically reducing soil displacement. Although water penetrates the openings in the netting, the layer beneath traps loose soil and prevents it from washing away.

To ensure effective erosion control, install the netting with staples placed every 2-3 feet. This maintains secure contact between the netting and the soil, optimizing stability and promoting vegetation growth.

FAQ

What is jute netting used for?

Jute netting is primarily used for erosion control applications such as stabilizing slopes, embankments, drainage ditches, sand dunes, riverbanks, stream channels, and shorelines. It is also effective in protecting newly seeded areas and aiding vegetation growth.

How long does jute netting last?

The life expectancy of jute netting ranges from 6 months to 2 years. Its lifespan may extend further depending on environmental factors such as sun exposure, moisture levels, and soil conditions.

How do you use jute netting for erosion control?

To use jute netting, first clear the area of clods, stones, and debris. Unroll the netting down the slope or in the direction of water flow, ensuring full coverage. Secure the netting to the soil with landscape staples placed every 2-3 feet. Proper installation will effectively prevent erosion during heavy rainfall.

How strong is jute netting?

Jute netting is made from one of the strongest natural vegetable fibers available, offering excellent resistance to heat and weather. Its strength makes it ideal for erosion control and other applications, including use as a natural rope material.

Can I use a lawn mower after installing jute netting?

Yes, you can use a lawn mower after installing jute netting, but it must be installed correctly. Ensure the netting is securely stapled to the ground and lies flush with the soil to avoid damage to the mower or displacement of the netting.

Installation Instructions

  1. Prepare the Area: Clear debris, rake soil to a level surface, and grade as needed. For larger jobs, machinery like a Bobcat can be used.
  2. Apply Seeds and Mulch: Spread seeds and mulch evenly over the prepared area before installing the netting.
  3. Unroll the Jute Netting: Lay the netting along the slope or terrain in the direction of water flow.
  4. Trench the Top Edge: Create a 6-inch-deep trench at the top of the slope. Place the jute netting into the trench, leaving 12 inches of material extending beyond the trench.
  5. Secure with Staples: Place staples every 1 foot along the trench to anchor the material firmly. On average, each sod staple should be placed 3 to 4 feet apart.
  6. Backfill the Trench: Fill and compact the trench with soil, covering the secured edge of the jute netting.
  7. Staple the Matting: Secure the rest of the netting to the soil, placing staples every 2-3 feet. Ensure all staples are flush with the ground.
  8. Overlap Edges: Overlap the edges of adjacent rolls by 2-6 inches. At the end of each roll, fold back 4-9 inches and overlap it with the next roll by 4-8 inches. Staple securely to prevent shifting.
