Installation Instructions
1. Preparation
- Review drawings & specs: Confirm dowel bar diameter, spacing, and joint type per the project requirements.
- Surface check: Ensure the formwork or bulkhead is straight, clean, and stable.
- Marking: Mark dowel locations on the bulkhead or form face at the specified spacing (typically 12”–18” on center, unless otherwise noted).
2. Sleeve Installation
- Position the Speed Dowel sleeves:
- Attach the plastic sleeve/base unit (female side) directly to the formwork at each marked location.
- The open sleeve end should face outward toward the adjacent pour.
- Fasten securely:
- Use nails, screws, or adhesive backing (depending on the sleeve design) so they stay fixed during the pour.
- Alignment check:
- Ensure each sleeve is set perpendicular to the joint and parallel to slab surface.
- Misalignment can cause binding and restrict slab movement.
3. First Concrete Pour
- Place and vibrate the first pour around the Speed Dowel sleeves.
- Confirm sleeves remain in place and properly aligned during consolidation.
- Allow concrete to cure and strip formwork.
4. Dowel Bar Installation
- After removing the bulkhead/form:
- Insert the dowel bar into the Speed Dowel sleeve.
- Push bar in fully until it seats against the sleeve stop.
- The closed end of the sleeve provides a void for movement (do not fill or block).
5. Second Concrete Pour
- Place reinforcement and concrete for the adjacent slab.
- The exposed portion of each dowel bar becomes embedded in the second pour.
- Maintain dowel alignment during pour and vibration.
6. Final Checks
- Movement: Verify that the dowel allows for longitudinal movement inside the sleeve (for shrinkage and expansion).
- Load Transfer: Confirm that dowels bridge the joint evenly across the slab thickness.
FAQ
What is the purpose of a dowel sleeve?
A dowel sleeve provides a secure and efficient way to align round dowels in concrete expansion joints. This ensures that the dowels can transfer loads effectively between concrete slabs, preventing differential settlement and maintaining the structural integrity of the pavement.
How long should dowels be in concrete?
Dowels in concrete are typically 18 inches long, though the length can vary depending on the specific application and load requirements. For our concrete dowel sleeves, a 1/2 in x 18 in smooth dowel is recommended for optimal performance.
